Gondry goes over the top

The current HP campaign is an interesting one.

I do like most of the ads, but sadly the ideas remind me of an old Apple campaign. However unlike Apple, HP can't seem to keep things simple.

This is especially true in this Michel Gondry spot, which is utterly charming, but overly long.

It's also, let's be honest, more than a little self indulgent.

Looks like I might be sticking with my Mac for a little while longer.

Completely unnecessary annoying American tagline at the end.

When it all boils down, this is just a testimonial ad using someone who appeals to the target market. My twentysomething art director jumped up and nearly wet her pants when I said 'Who is Michel Gondry', then we watched the ad and she said 'I'd buy one just because it's him'. Ironic, given that edgy young art directors pretend to know their minds.

It's exactly the same as Bert Newton selling Aspros to pensioners. Just a lot more expensive.

Oh Stan, you beat me to it. I wrote a blog post on this ad last night but didn't post it because I didn't like what I wrote. I'll fix it now and you can read my thoughts.
